Permika Montreal - Permika Montreal would like to congratulate Muhammad Zuhdi (34) for his successful defense of his dissertation which thus marks the completion of his PhD degree from the faculty of Education, McGill University.

His dissertation, entitled "Social and Political Influence on Religious School: A Historical Perspective on Indonesian Islamic School Curricula," explains the evolution of curricula in various Muslim schools in Indonesia since the country's independence until present era.

This examination of education in Indonesia is a point of focus not only of Zuhdi, but also of his fellow peers who, like him, came to McGill through a scholarship to CIDA which was distributed through IISEP project (IAIN-Indonesia Social Equity Project).

A Lecturer at the Faculty of Tarbiyah IAIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, Zuhdi came to Montreal on August 17, 2001, whereupon hi was enrolled in the faculty of Education.

Within the Indonesian community in Montreal, he is not only known as a PhD student ever so busy with studies but also as an authority of sorts in religious matters. He is an active member of the community's 'pengajian' Syiarmontreal, and has also held a position in Permika Montreal as web and mailing list coordinator.

When asked what is the next best thing you're looking forward to after completing his degree, he responded that he's 'looking forward to get together with my family, that the first thing in my mind. Then I am going to teach at UIN and continue to do some research related to my expertise.

Muhammad Zuhdi has a wife, Nining, and a daughter, Izza, with whom he will be shortly reunited in Indonesia.
